Combine soy sauce, vinegar, crushed garlic, bay leaves, and peppercorns in a large pot.
Add chicken and pork pieces, toss to coat, and marinate 30 minutes.
Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cover and cook 35 minutes.
Remove meat from the sauce. Heat oil in a pan and sear the meat until browned on all sides.
Reduce the braising liquid by half over medium-high heat until thick and glossy.
Return meat to the sauce, toss to coat. Serve over steamed white rice.
